how to elope in france [updated for 2026]

Tips & Tricks for an unique elopement experience

decide if an france elopement is right for you

I know you're eager to see the locations I've chosen for your elopement in France. Even if you don't have all the details for planning your elopement, it's essential to be sure of what it entails. The important thing is to understand that elopement is an intentional way to elevate your love to a new level, setting aside the traditional wedding rituals.

An elopement in France can be so many things: exchanging vows by a mountain lake; saying "I do" in one of France's most beautiful cathedrals; or even an adventurous elopement at a ski resort, complete with a wedding fondue and raclette <3

If you're not entirely sure, let these 6 things you should know before elope to convince you. This article will help you gain a clearer perspective.

I truly believe you'll have the time of your life, especially since it only happens once. So don't hesitate and go for it!

how to choose where to elope in france

I ) French cuisine / gastronomy

If we mention gastronomy, you'll probably put French cuisine in the first three names that come to mind, that's for sure. But did you know that what we call the "gastronomic meal of the French" was inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list in 2010? This French tradition, which has endured for years, is now recognized worldwide!

All that's left is for you to come and celebrate your elopement in France, to eat well, drink well, and party!

As passionate food lovers, my family can help you choose your menu according to your tastes and pair it with the perfect wine! Contact me to find out more :)

II ) french art & culture

France has over 1200 museums, most of which are located in its capital, Paris, which houses the world's most famous museum: the Louvre. This abundance of art and culture has allowed this country to rise among the greatest. How about getting married in one of the most beautiful museums of our civilization, surrounded by paintings by the most prestigious artists of recent centuries? Wouldn't that be wonderful?

You could also head towards the magnificent Loire castles, where you would admire the Château de Chambord, a wonderful jewel of the Renaissance; a place where François I and Louis XIV stayed.

What do you think? If this gives you any ideas, send me a message so we can discuss making it happen!

III ) La pluralité des paysages

If majestic mansions don't interest you at all, let's move on to the landscapes that France has to offer!

Let's not think only about food and culture, a little rest (or not…) in the panoramic immensities that nature sends us, would not be unwelcome.

Let's see what landscapes you could elope in, and celebrate your love surrounded by your loved ones.

find your france elopement photographer & book your france elopement packages

When you're doing your first research for this unique experience, don't forget that the elopement photographer is the only one with all the informations you need. He's THE person you must trust completely because your elopement is in his hands: he can (and should) help you as much as possible to create the intimate wedding of your dreams.

An elopement photographer in France must know the country and every landscape its region has to offer. He's there to transform your hazy vision into a clear reality, offering you an experience you will never forget.

Of course, for me, the photographer must be more than just someone who takes pictures and leaves. He must be with you every step of the way, documenting each moment, and know how to tell your story through photographs of this unforgettable experience.

book the accomodations, venues, transportation, pets

After choosing your elopement photographer, it's essential to move on to the next steps: I'm talking about accommodation, transportation, your pets…

For accommodation, remember that this is where you'll have your first look, and it will also be the reception venue—if your family and close friends are with you. It's therefore important that the accommodation you choose for your elopement reflects what you've envisioned during all these months of planning.

As for travel, traffic jams can happen. Of course, this depends on the location you choose: the closer you get to the city, the higher the likelihood of traffic. Therefore, it's best to add extra time to the timeline to manage these kinds of unforeseen events as much as possible. A little further down, I've included an example of what a one-day and two-day elopement timeline in France might look like.

If you're coming from the Americas, Africa, Oceania, or Asia, you'll inevitably land in Paris. From the French capital, you can go anywhere from there. For Europeans, it depends: it could be Paris, Lyon, or Marseille, respectively in the north, east, or south of France. Be aware of potential strikes, though, and keep your important documents with you.

Our pets are important to us, and I understand you'd want them by your side during your elopement in France. The country is pet-friendly, but some places won't allow them; I'm thinking of national parks like the Vanoise in southeastern France. If you'd like to learn more, I've written a guide on elopement with pets.

I'm here to help you choose the right place so you can celebrate this moment together.

Don't forget to bring everything you need for the safety of your pet, as well as others.

Are you crossing borders? Remember your passport and vaccinations. If you're flying, the animal cage must be IATA-approved and include at least water.

Of course, once you're there: fresh water, food, a leash, and waste bags. Choose a location with plenty of shade.

When choosing your elopement location in France, research how to get there; this will help you choose the right car when you rent it.

For those living outside Europe, bring your driver's license and apply for an international driving permit for added security.

CLASSIC TIMELINES for a france elopement
1 day or 2 days

to find out about the administrative aspects: permits, paperwork to make the marriage legal.

For many places in France, you don't need a permit to elope. However, it's essential to confirm this by searching online or calling the place in question. That's great, cause I'm here for that! National parks generally prefer to be asked for permission.

For Americans and people living in the Schengen Area, a visa isn't required as long as your stay in France doesn't exceed 90 days. However, stay alert for any changes that might occur.
I recommend visiting the French government website, which has created a simulator to determine if a visa is required for your elopement in France.

For American couples who wish to legally marry in France, it is possible, and you should contact the American Embassy in France for information. Every couple is unique, so I'll need more information to give you the best advice.

For couples residing in the European Union, a civil marriage is recognized throughout the EU, regardless of the country you choose to marry in. However, queer couples should be aware that some countries do not recognize same-sex marriage.
